The art halls of the Cultural Centre at the Municipality of Lefkada, hosted a different and very remarkable exhibition from the Historical Folklore Museum of Varnavas, with works of high art made of bread” (Excerpt from TA NEA OF LEFKADA, Great Tuesday, April 3, 2007).
In the beautiful island of Lefkada, the island of music and arts, the island of Angelos Sikelianos and Aristotle Valaoritis, “The Roads of Bread” of the Historical Folklore Museum of Varnavas made a stop. The exhibition was held on the initiative of the “Orpheus” Music and Philological Group, which celebrates 70 years of contribution to Lefkada this year. This important event was introduced by the president of ORFEAS Mr. Kostas Katopodis, the president of the Folklore Museum of Lefkada Mrs. Toula Sklirou and the president of H.F.M.V Mrs. Milea Pappa. All three keynote speakers referred to the importance of bread from antiquity to the present day as well as “the excellent effort for the large collection of traditional breads by the Historical Folklore Museum of Varnavas. An effort of contribution and history to our country”, as emphasized.
Ms. Milea Pappa referred in detail to all the bread exhibits representing the entire Greek territory, as well as the twelve foreign countries, and stressed “that a people without tradition and memory has no future”. The exhibition, which was covered by the local press (Lefkada news) and the local TV channel remained on the island for ten days. It was visited by hundreds of citizens, among them the Mayor of Lefkada, the Vice President of the Cultural Centre, the Board of Orpheus and the Folklore Museum of Lefkada “Pantazi Kontomichi” as well as representatives of institutions, associations and schools. “The streets of bread” will continue for the next stops in cities of our country and abroad.
